Themes in Psalm 119

September 21, 2020 by Justin Leave a Comment

Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.

Psalm 119:2

With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.

Psalm 119:10

Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

Psalm 119:34

I intreated thy favour with my whole heart: be merciful unto me according to thy word.

Psalm 119:58

The proud have forged a lie against me: but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart.

Psalm 119:69

I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O LORD: I will keep thy statutes.

Psalm 119:145

The first theme in Psalm 119 is to serve God with your whole heart. This is the only way to be wholly His and to be holy in heart. God loves it when you give Him your whole heart. Fill your life with God’s Word and God’s Spirit and watch how the favor of the Lord will rest upon your life. If God’s Word be true, then it is worth serving God with all that you are!

I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.

Psalm 119:15

Princes also did sit and speak against me: but thy servant did meditate in thy statutes.

Psalm 119:23

My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.

Psalm 119:48

Let the proud be ashamed; for they dealt perversely with me without a cause: but I will meditate in thy precepts.

Psalm 119:78

O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

Psalm 119:97

I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

Psalm 119:99

Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.

Psalm 119:148

Meditation in God’s Word is the 2nd theme in Psalm 119. Without thinking and meditating on God’s Word, there will be no revelation by God’s Holy Spirit. The Holy Word and the Holy Spirit are inseparable. Where you find one, you’ll find the other. As we meditate in the Word, the Holy Spirit teaches us all things and leads us into all truth, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. Meditating in God’s Word is one sign of someone who is serving God with their whole heart.

I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

Psalm 119:16

The bands of the wicked have robbed me: but I have not forgotten thy law.

Psalm 119:61

For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget thy statutes.

Psalm 119:83

I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.

Psalm 119:93

My zeal hath consumed me, because mine enemies have forgotten thy words.

Psalm 119:139

Consider mine affliction, and deliver me: for I do not forget thy law.

Psalm 119:153

I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.

Psalm 119:176

Remembering or not forgetting God’s Word is another theme in Psalm 119. Because we seek God with the whole heart and meditate in His Word, the end result is that we do not forget His commandments. If we remember His commandments, then we can do His commandments and keep them. It is the wicked that forget God’s Word and misquote it. It is the wicked that don’t read or meditate in God’s Word. Having a love for God’s truth is a sign that we are born again Christians.

My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy word.

Psalm 119:25

Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.

Psalm 119:37

Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness.

Psalm 119:40

This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.

Psalm 119:50

Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth.

Psalm 119:88

I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O LORD, according unto thy word.

Psalm 119:107

Hear my voice according unto thy lovingkindness: O LORD, quicken me according to thy judgment.

Psalm 119:149

Plead my cause, and deliver me: quicken me according to thy word.

Psalm 119:154

Great are thy tender mercies, O LORD: quicken me according to thy judgments.

Psalm 119:156

Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness.

Psalm 119:159

Another theme in Psalm 119 is that God’s Word and His entire being quickens us, or makes us alive. In the New Testament it is said that God the Father, God the Son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit all play a part in quickening us. God is the living God and everything He touches becomes alive. Allow God to quicken you by serving Him with the whole heart, meditating in His Word and not forgetting His Word to do it.

Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.

Psalm 119:1

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

Psalm 119:9

I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.

Psalm 119:14

I have declared my ways, and thou heardest me: teach me thy statutes.

Psalm 119:26

Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me thy law graciously.

Psalm 119:29

I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me.

Psalm 119:30

Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.

Psalm 119:33

Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

Psalm 119:35

I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.

Psalm 119:101

Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

Psalm 119:104

Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way.

Psalm 119:128

I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee.

Psalm 119:168

Another theme of Psalm 119 is that the Word of God prepares a way for us to walk in. Just like the Israelites went through the Red sea with the water on the left and the right making straight a path, so the Word of God, rightly divided, is the pathway to righteousness. If we turn to the right or the left, the Word is there is keep the path, the Word is there to correct us and discipline us. When we walk in the way of truth, we naturally hate every false way. Jesus said His sheep hear His voice and follow Him in the true path of life. We know not the voice of strangers and refuse to walk in the path of wickedness.

Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.

Psalm 119:67

It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.

Psalm 119:71

I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.

Psalm 119:75

Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction.

Psalm 119:92

I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O LORD, according unto thy word

Psalm 119:107

Consider mine affliction, and deliver me: for I do not forget thy law.

Psalm 119:153

Another theme in Psalm 119 is affliction. The end result of affliction is that we are humbled before God. In God’s faithfulness He allows our affliction, for it works an eternal weight of glory in our lives. Don’t be ashamed to suffer for the gospel’s sake. Affliction is used by God to transform us from glory to glory into the image of Jesus Christ. Jesus suffered by affliction and learned obedience by the things He suffered. The servant is not greater than His master so we must walk the path of affliction so that we are humble before God and worthy of the kingdom of God for which we suffer.

Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope.

Psalm 119:49

My soul fainteth for thy salvation: but I hope in thy word.

Psalm 119:81

Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.

Psalm 119:114

Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.

Psalm 119:116

I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word.

Psalm 119:147

Hope in God’s Word is another theme of Psalm 119. Our hope is not only for this life, but the life to come. The great hope of the church is to live forever with Christ and to know Him in an intimate way. God’s Word reveals the character of God, for out of the abundance of His heart His mouth speaks. There are many wonderful promises in God’s Word and these all inspire hope as the Spirit quickens us and makes us alive to the realities of God’s holy Word. Without God’s Word, we have no hope. So then it is critical that we spend much time in the Word of God each day so that our hope does not diminish.

I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.

Psalm 119:14

The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.

Psalm 119:72

Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.

Psalm 119:127

I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.

Psalm 119:162

The last theme in Psalm 119 is that God’s Word is greater than natural riches or money. God’s Word impacts eternity while natural riches only benefit in this life. So, God’s Word is greater and should be more important to us than money. God’s Word is the currency with which we can obtain the promises of God for our lives. We must give the Word the value it deserves in our lives. Truth is an accurate description of reality. The reality is that God’s Word is the greatest thing He has given us, so esteeming it to be the true riches shows that we are indeed walking in the truth. Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
