The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.Deuteronomy 29:29
God has His secrets, things He is purposely keeping hidden from view for now. Someday He will reveal more of His secrets. Maybe we’ll have to wait until we are in heaven with Christ to have more revelation of these things. Yet, God delights in revealing some of his secrets to us right now, that we may walk in His commandments and do His will. God wants us to understand how to live a life that is pleasing to Him, in all godliness and holiness before Him, all the days of our lives. For this study, we are going to look at some of the mysteries mentioned in the New Testament.
And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.Matthew 13:10-11
God keeps His revelations hidden from those that aren’t pure in heart. He said blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see or understand God. That’s why Jesus spoke in parables, so that only those with a right heart before God would understand the things that were spoken. We see Jesus speaking parables to the multitudes and then explaining the parables later alone to His disciples. If you are a disciple of Jesus Christ then the revelations of God are yours through faith in Christ!
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.1 Corinthians 2:9-10
The secrets of God don’t enter in to the heart of the natural man. We have to be filled with the Holy Spirit of God and be spiritual sons and daughters in order to commune with the Holy Spirit and receive revelation from God. The Spirit will reveal deep truths about Jesus Christ, because that is His ministry and that is what He was sent by Jesus to do in the earth.
Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:Romans 16:25-26
In the Old Testament salvation came through the natural nation of Israel. It was a secret that the gospel of Jesus Christ would go to the whole world for the salvation of all men and women everywhere. The mystery has been revealed through Jesus Christ! The commandment of God is that all people everywhere would repent towards God and put faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the remission of sin. This is what God wants preached to the whole world by His Spirit and by His church indwelled by the Spirit.
And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,Ephesians 6:19
The gospel of Jesus Christ is mysterious to those who don’t know Christ. Yet, to us who are saved the revelation of Christ to our hearts has set us free from a life of sin and death. It is still a mystery to those of us who are saved. How can a wonderful gospel like this be true? It is beyond our full comprehension right now, yet we can still partake of the benefits of His salvation.
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.1 Corinthians 14:2
When we pray in the Spirit (in unknown tongues), we are speaking mysteries. It is a perfect prayer offered up through us by the Holy Spirit in a language that God understands. No man is meant to understand it. It is a prayer of faith, trusting the Holy Spirit to pray through us. God and man cooperating for the salvation of mankind. It is a sweet mystery.
For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.2 Thessalonians 2:7
There is a mystery inherent in sin. How can people commit sin against such a loving and wonderful God? How can they turn their backs on Christ? Antichrist religion specifically is what is mentioned in these verses. People that used to belong to Christ, turning from the commandments of God to their own sinful, demonic devices. This is a mystery we don’t want any part of.
Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.1 Timothy 3:9
Faith in God is mysterious to the natural mind. Even those that are saved are amazed to be living by faith, that is, trusting the Word of God to order their lives in Christ Jesus. Faith is a work of the Holy Spirit, which mankind cooperates with to see the salvation of their spirits. How wonderful is this mystery of faith! Yet, we can walk in it day by day, trusting God and His Word to lead us, teach us and guide us into all Truth.
God wants us to understand His mysteries. As we study to show ourselves approved unto God, He will be faithful to reveal more of His mysteries to us. We must hunger and thirst after righteousness, and we will be filled!
