Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?2 Chronicles 20:7
But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend.Isaiah 41:8
Can a man be friends with God? Surely it is possible. These verses say that Abraham was a friend of God. What made him so special? We know God is no respecter of persons, so it couldn’t have been anything arbitrary like the way Abraham looked outwardly or his clothing. God deals with the hearts of mankind. It was Abraham’s heart for God that earned him the title ‘Friend of God’.
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.James 2:23
For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.Romans 4:3
Abraham believed the Word of God. That’s why he was a friend of God. God loves it when people believe what He said to them. God’s Word, the Bible, is full of God’s promises to us. Who will dare believe Him? Very few do, but those that choose the narrow way of Jesus Christ are His friends.
Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.Romans 4:16-22
Another word for belief is faith. Abraham was a man of faith. He believed the Word of God above what he saw, heard or felt. When God makes a promise, He only makes it because He is able to perform it! Otherwise God’s Word would not be worth anything, if there weren’t an Almighty God to back up what He has said. God will do what He has promised to do. He’s looking for men and women that will believe Him. Have faith in Him and His Word. All people are capable of faith, but so few choose to believe God at His Word. If you will do that, you can be a friend of God. God will be pleased with your life and will shine down upon you with mercy and favor.
